49ers Anticipate Signing Jimmy Garoppolo To Franchise Tag

Nov 27, 2017 1:27 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are anticipating signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year franchise tag in the offseason that will be worth approximately $25 million.

The 49ers have ample cap space to sign Garoppolo to that rich of a one-year deal.

“He does not have to play (this season),” Kyle Shanahan said. “It’s not that we’re coming to this deadline and we’ve got to decide our future, ours and his, for both sides. We’ve got six games left and we’re going to have next year, also. I know you have to franchise a quarterback to keep him, but quarterbacks are expensive. And that is not that big of a deal to us.”

The franchise tag would give the 49ers more information before committing long-term.

“It would be great if it could work out that way (a long-term contract), but that’s just not the situation any of us are in,” Shanahan said. “So you want to play it out. That is the good thing about the franchise tag and that’s what, to me, made it an easier decision to trade for him at the time we did to where it’s - I don’t want to do anything very impulsive that could put our team at risk.

“But that’s what’s cool about having something like (the franchise tag): Hey, alright, I would love to have a guy like that, especially for only a second-round pick. Definitely. Do we have to make a decision this fast for the future in terms of a long-term deal and everything? No, you don’t. If you do, and it works out, and you feel great about it, that’s awesome. But if not, that’s why the rules are the way they are.”

Chiefs Sign Darrelle Revis

Nov 23, 2017 1:16 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Darrelle Revis.

Revis had been a free agent this season.

"The reason for me returning is the fire I have, the fuel I have to continue to play this game at a high level,'' Revis said. "My role is to help win. Whatever is best for the team, whether my position is playing a few downs or playing in the slot, wherever Coach wants to play me and feels he can utilize me to help win.''

Marcus Peters and Steven Nelson have been the starting cornerbacks, but the Chiefs have struggled to find any consistency from their third cornerbacks.

Cardinals, Larry Fitzgerald Agree On One-Year Extension

Nov 17, 2017 1:42 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have announced a one-year contract extension with Larry Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald's contract previously had a voidable year in 2018 for cap purposes, but the new agreement assures the future Hall of Famer will play next season.

He currently ranks sixth in the NFL's all-time receiving list with 15,066 yards. Barring injury, he should finish the season third, behind only Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens.

Packers Release Martellus Bennett

Nov 8, 2017 9:33 PM

The Green Bay Packers have cut Martellus Bennett with the failure to disclose a medical condition designation.

The Packers can file a grievance to reclaim the $4.2 million in remaining prorated signing bonus money.

Bennett's release comes hours after Packers coach Mike McCarthy ruled him out for this week because of a shoulder injury.

Bennett hasn't played since he announced during the Packers' bye week that he was "pretty sure" this would be his last NFL season.

AJ McCarron Files Grievance, Seeking Unrestricted Free Agency In 2018

Nov 5, 2017 8:44 AM

AJ McCarron has filed a grievance against the Cincinnati Bengals in order to become an unrestricted free agent in 2018.

The ruling could determine whether the Cleveland Browns can sign McCarron this offseason without giving compensation to the Bengals.

The Browns agreed to send second- and third-round picks to the Bengals in a trade that would have sent McCarron to Cleveland on Tuesday. The trade was rejected by the NFL after the paperwork was submitted past the trade deadline.

Cincinnati likely would place a first-round tender on McCarron as a restricted free agent, which would make it difficult for him sign an offer sheet.

49ers Not Yet Committed To Jimmy Garoppolo

Nov 5, 2017 8:34 AM

The San Francisco 49ers aren't necessarily committed to signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term contract.

The 49ers have approximately $60 million in cap space should they want to pursue Kirk Cousins, or they could use their high first round pick on a quarterback in the draft.

The 49ers could use a franchise tag on Garoppolo and then trade him. Sources say there would be interest where the 49ers could get back more than the second round pick they traded to the Patriots.

At the very least, Garoppolo will be a place holder that gives the 49ers flexibility.

Texans Sign Matt McGloin

Nov 2, 2017 5:44 PM

The Houston Texans have signed Matt McGloin after losing Deshaun Watson for the remainder of the 2017 season with a torn ACL.

McGloin played for the Oakland Raiders from 2013 until 2016 but didn't start in their playoff game after Derek Carr was hurt as the team instead turned to Connor Cook.

McGloin signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason and was released before the start of the season.

McGloin played for Bill O'Brien at Penn State.

The Texans passed on an opportunity to pursue Colin Kaepernick despite owner Bob McNair's racially charged comments during a recent meeting with players over the anthem controversy.
